It's Performance Time!

Our students have many opportunities to become involved in all different sorts of performances. And around this time of the year, it's a particularly busy time!

Several weeks ago around 30 of our students joined with students from a host of other Illawarra schools to perform in the Wollongong Choral Festival. On stage at Wollongong Town Hall, singing in front of a full house, will be a lasting memory for everyone involved. In particular, congratulations to Tien M, one of only a few students who performed a solo.

Then came Education Week, a wonderful opportunity for our school band (with over 40 students) to bedazzle an enthusiastic audience of parents and grandparents with what they've learnt this year. Our drummers, guitarists, and brass and woodwind players, put on a show like no other!

Moving briefly away from musical performances, our team of seven Stage 3 students recently participated in the regional Tournament of Minds competition. They wrote and performed a ten minute theatrical piece, as a response to an engineering and mathematics challenge. In addition, they had to perform a spontaneous challenge before a panel of judges, with virtually no time to prepare. With over 40 schools involved, the Mount Ousley team was named regional champions, and will now compete against other champion schools from around NSW at the state Tournament of Minds competition at UNSW.

Our two school debating teams also continue to achieve success in the Premier's Debating Challenge. They have had recent wins against other Illawarra schools, promoting them to the next round of the competition.

This weekend just gone saw another 30 Mount Ousley students join with around 3,000 public primary and high school students for Southern Stars. It was a dance and musical extravaganza, performed at Wollongong Entertainment Centre, in front of tens of thousands of adoring spectators. As well as our exquisitely costumed dance group participating, one of our Stage 3 students, Kataraina P, performed as a featured dancer. Kat and our dance group were exceptional! And I imagine they'll be just a little tired, after a very long week of rehearsals and performances.

So that rounds out August, a very busy month for performances. Congratulations to all involved! Of course, nothing would have been possible without the enormous support of parents getting kids to rehearsals and performances all over the Illawarra, and the teachers who gave up so much of their own time to coach and support students at evening and weekend events. Thank you all!
